How to replace a tyre

Equipment

  • Socket wrench / spanner
  • Jack / stand
  • Spare tyre
  • Bucket (optional to hold washers and nuts so they do not get lost)

Safety precautions

Try not to drop the tyre on your foot😊. It might be painful. If you do drop the tyre on your foot and it starts to swell, simply apply a cold icepack to help the swelling go down.

Method

How to take off a tyre

  1. Put the bike in gear and put on the parking brake (you do not want the bike to roll away while you are working on it)
  2. Place the jack under the bike in a stable location.
To do this you will use the lever and push it up and down to rise the jack
  3. The tire should not be fully off the ground.
  4. Using a spanner or a socket wrench loosen all the nuts (but do not take them off yet)
  5. Now that the nuts are loosened you can jack the tire all the way up so that it is off the ground.
  6. Using a spanner take off all the nuts, working diagonally (you can place the nuts and washers into a bucket so that they do not get lost)
When taking off the nuts try to work diagonally and straight to not damage anything. I find it easiest to loosen the nut then take it off using my fingers.
  7. Now you can take off the tire straight but be careful not to drop of on your toes.
  8. Place the tire on the ground on its side to prevent it from rolling away.

How to put on a tyre

Make sure the tyre aligns with the bolts – if not then you will have to use the jack to make the bike higher.

  1. Make sure the valve is facing you (on the outside of the tyre). Place the tyre on the bolts
  2. Put the washer on the bolt first, then the nut. While putting it on make sure you work diagonally to make sure the tyre is placed back on the bike straight.
  3. Make sure all the nuts are hand tight (work diagonally)
  4. Using a socket wrench tighten the nuts (continue to work diagonally). Whilst doing this told the tire o ensure that it doesn’t spin.
  5. Now you can lower the bike using the Jack
To do this you will take out the lever and use it to unscrew the bolt on the jack.
  6. Now that the bike is on the ground you can tighten the nuts properly. Still working diagonally so it is on straight.
Nicole Penberthy

During this project it made me realise how everything is connected, even if you are now aware of it. For example, when fixing a tyre, you might encounter physical or emotional stress because you cannot get the nuts off. You might encounter stress if you have not eaten a meal because you have no time because you have to study, which also involves your life skills and coping mechanisms. If you have a blown lightbulb ad you do not have any light you can encounter environmental stress. Everything in this project is connected and that I why I believe these demonstrations are so important to develop yourself in society. Because these simple tasks teach you life skills you need for the rest of your life. The transition between school and university may be hard but it is lessons like this that will make it easier for you😊😊enjoy!!
